The Blackwater Camper's Guide: Tennessee Edition

Where to sleep on a Tennessee paddling trip, from state parks to river camps.

Cover of The Blackwater Camper's Guide, Tennessee Edition

Where to sleep on a Tennessee paddling trip: the Smokies, Big South Fork and the Obed, Cherokee National Forest, Army Corps lake campgrounds and state parks. Every fee, reservation line and rule on these pages came from the people who run the place, and each card says who. Where they do not publish something, the card says so instead of guessing.

  • 53 campgrounds and river camps across Tennessee
  • 3 regions: East Tennessee and the Smokies, The Cumberland Plateau, and Middle Tennessee
  • Sites, fees, reservations, season, pets and fire rules on every card, each with its source
  • A quick reference table of every site, and a paddle-from-camp note that points to the Paddler's Guide
  • Where the agencies publish nothing, the card says so instead of guessing

Inside the book

Every Tennessee campground and river camp in this guide

The Camper's Guide covers 57 places to sleep on a Tennessee trip, from state parks to river camps. Each entry below is taken from the book: what kind of camp it is, the sites, the reservation details, pets and fire rules, and whether you can paddle from it. Fees and rules were checked Sept 2026 and change, so confirm with the operator before you go.

Know before you go

Fees changeEvery fee in this book carries its check date, September 2026. Tennessee State Parks, the Forest Service and the Army Corps set their own rates and change them, so where a page did not publish a fee, the entry says so and points you to the agency.
Reserve earlySmall places fill first. Backcountry, paddle-in and river camps often need a permit or a reservation. The Reserve line in each entry says what the agency published.
Leave No TracePack out everything you pack in, food scraps too. Camp on sand, rock or an established site, well above the waterline. Use the toilet provided, or dig a cathole well away from water and camp. Leave what you find, and let the wildlife be.
Fire bansFire rules change with the weather. Fires only in provided rings where allowed; check the managing agency's alerts page before every trip. Carry a stove on every trip so a burn ban never costs you supper.
Check the agency pageStorms, low water, construction, hunts and wildfire close campgrounds without warning. Check the agency page the week you go.

Common questions

Are the fees in this guide current?

Every fee in this book carries its check date, September 2026. Tennessee State Parks, the Forest Service and the Army Corps set their own rates and change them, so where a page did not publish a fee, the entry says so and points you to the agency.

Do I need to reserve a campsite ahead of time?

Small places fill first. Backcountry, paddle-in and river camps often need a permit or a reservation. The Reserve line in each entry says what the agency published.

What Leave No Trace rules apply when I camp?

Pack out everything you pack in, food scraps too. Camp on sand, rock or an established site, well above the waterline. Use the toilet provided, or dig a cathole well away from water and camp. Leave what you find, and let the wildlife be.

Can I build a campfire at these campgrounds?

Fire rules change with the weather. Fires only in provided rings where allowed; check the managing agency's alerts page before every trip. Carry a stove on every trip so a burn ban never costs you supper.

Where do I check for closures before I go?

Storms, low water, construction, hunts and wildfire close campgrounds without warning. Check the agency page the week you go.
