Which book should I start with?
Start with the Camping for Beginners Guide, which covers the skills, gear and habits that make a first river trip safe and enjoyable. From there, pick the book that matches your next trip, such as the Canoe Camping Guide for a multi-day paddle or the Map and Compass Guide for finding your way on river and trail.
What do the books cover?
They cover camping basics, canoe camping, map and compass, camp kitchen and clean water, hunting, fishing, game processing, survival, family camping, rain and cold weather, wilderness first aid, advanced bushcraft, canoe handling and outdoor gear. Each book is built around the skills for one part of a trip on blackwater rivers and swamps.
Are the books printed?
Yes. Each guide is written as a printed book from Blackwater Outdoor Journeys LC, with chapters of step-by-step skills, rule and safety boxes, and practice at the end of each chapter. You can read the pages online as well.
Does each book stand alone?
Yes. Each guide has its own chapters, and its safety rules are repeated where they matter, so you can start with any of them. Chapters point to other chapters in the same book, not to a required sequence of books, and the books tell you to follow the local rule or the land manager where rules differ.
What does blackwater mean?
Blackwater is tea-colored water, stained by tannins from decaying vegetation. The color does not make the water safe to drink, and a dark surface can hide logs, shallow bars and changes in depth. The guides are written for these slow, stained rivers and swamps, including the Okefenokee refuge in Georgia.
Are these books for beginners or experienced campers?
Both. The Camping for Beginners Guide starts with the basics of a first river trip. Later books go further, such as the Woodsman Guide for advanced bushcraft and the Canoe Handling Guide for ferries, eddies and river rescue.
Do the books tell me where I can camp, hunt or light a fire?
They name the rules they know, such as the Okefenokee refuge permit for overnight camping and its three campfire sites, and they tell you to follow the local rule or the land manager for everything else. Check current rules, closures and water levels before every trip.
Built from real sources
The facts in each book come from agency, extension service and manufacturer sources, and each book has been audited line by line.
Complete on their own
Each book stands alone. Nothing says see another book, and nothing is cut to make a page fit.
Written for this water
Blackwater country, where the water is dark, the banks are soft and help is a long way off, with the Okefenokee refuge rules built in where they apply.
