Where it is and what it is like
A coastal tidal river and salt-marsh maze near Cumberland Sound, launched from Crooked River State Park. Spartina grass, winding creeks, and big open sky — a completely different world from the blackwater, and one that lives and dies by the tide.

Year-round; spring and fall are most comfortable, with fewer bugs and milder wind.
There's no streamflow gauge here — this is tidal water. Plan by the NOAA tide tables for the Cumberland Sound / St. Marys entrance area: paddle out on the ebb and back on the flood, and respect the wind, which fights the tide and kicks up chop in the open marsh.
Hazards and wildlife
Tidal current and wind are the whole game — a wind-against-tide chop can build fast in the open marsh. Mud flats at low tide, boat traffic in the sound, and easy-to-lose creek mouths. Carry a tide chart and a compass.
Dolphins, manatees, wading birds, ospreys, fiddler crabs, and the occasional gator up the freshwater creeks.

Field note
Marsh paddling is all about the tide. Ride the ebb out and the flood back, and never fight both wind and tide at once. Get it right and it's the most peaceful water in the region; get it wrong and it's a grind.
